Judy clutched the stopwatch to her chest. The secondhand thunked like a bass beat.

She didn’t enjoy timing every activity, but her therapist seemed to think it would help her organize her days.

Instead the heavy watch with its tubes and pulls synched itself to her heart. They beat together, wasting no time in letting her know that time was wasting every day. She finished the laundry, stared out the window for exactly thirty seconds.

Sherrie Flick is the author of six books, including the new story collection I HAVE NOT CONSIDERED CONSEQUENCES (Autumn House Press). She is co-editor of the Norton anthology FLASH FICTION AMERICA. She lives in Pittsburgh.
