My Wife In Real Life

by Ben Drevlow

Yesterday I had to explain to this woman at workshop why my fictional wife would’ve ever married my fictional self and all I could do is shrug. I said, I don’t know but it happened in real life and I’m not that creative.

Which was a real headfuck moment for me. Like what did my nonfictional wife ever see in me in the first place, and what can I do to make her see that again?

I’m pretty sure it’s not writing a very loosely fictionalized version of our marriage in which she drinks too much and cheats on me with one of her students.

I know this because I wrote that story and then wrote it again and again, even published a book about it when we were still married, and she definitely listed it as one of the reasons she didn’t want to be married to me anymore—like, for real for real.

Drevlow runs BULL and writes books about mostly the same things. He lives in Statesboro, GA with his nonfiction wife and online at thedrevlow-olsonshow.com.
