Ever since Martha killed her asparagus fern, she’s been buying new plants: a trio of succulents sit above the sink, (next to the bowl that holds her wedding ring while she washes), four hanging plants line her front window, (flanked by a banana tree). The neighbors can no longer peer in.

A young man holding an orange tree knocks on the door with his elbow. Martha asks him to come inside, to put the tree by the chair where his father used to sit. “He loved the scent of citrus.”

Together, they breathe in the air.
