Wishing for Storms like Stars

My tongue wants water, but instead tastes hot sand. She looks beyond the horizon of dust, seeing the things I cannot yet see.

Under the darkening sky, she says, “The sun is also a star.”

Electricity cracks open the heavens and I feel a single droplet fall into the crater of my collarbone. Through storms and stars and sand, I am with her and, when I am with her, I am safe.

Then comes the thunder.
