At Carcassonne we bought cheese and baguettes and stuffed them into our backpacks. We’d arrived overnight on a Paris train, weary from sleeping in a crowded car. I had felt and understood French before I spoke it. We carried a particular weight on our shoulders, knowing we were never meant to be there. The truth is, we were never meant to be anywhere. Still, we admired the double-walled castle, chewed the crisp crusts, tasted buttery brie on our tongues, and left crumbs for anyone who might one day find us.
