We gave each other words to spell. Sexy words like frangipane and assimilate, words with weird workings, woke words, wobbly words, words like blancmange you wouldn’t really think of. Words for the things we love most in the world. Proper nouns are good. Why would we want words when we have each other? Words for empty fridges, words for one world, what word works whenever, okay, ok, o.k.?

Jonathan Cardew’s fiction appears in Cincinnati Review, Cream City Review, wigleaf, SmokeLong Quarterly, and others. He is the author of the chapbook, A World Beyond Cardboard (ELJ Editions). He lives in Milwaukee, Wis.
