An unexpected silence over this city of four million seems impossible, save for when something’s ending. It’s in the heat this week. It’s in air conditioners and fathers frying eggs on sidewalks for kids in expectant wonder. But isn’t wonder dying among kids who expect more air conditioning than fresh air? I expect more air conditioning, except when my hens are having kids and I’m like a father sweating in expectant wonder. Eggs hatching, crackling, into the heat of this silent city with fresh chicks wishing I’d turn on the air conditioning and stop that sidewalk sizzling.

Bradley David’s poetry, fiction and genre-blending works appear in, Terrain, Identity Theory, The Los Angeles Review and numerous other publications. Pieces have been nominated for the Pushcart and Best of the Net. He is currently the blended-genre senior editor at jmww journal.
