Okay, Maybe Just a Little Hoot From Time to Time

by Tara Campbell

It wasn’t like I was brushing my teeth in front of a priceless canvas. I’m always polite about it. I don’t bring in beer, or scream at night to hear the echoes in the empty galleries. I’m generally quiet, don’t even bring out my toothbrush unless I’m absolutely certain no one else is around. I don’t disrupt on purpose; it’s only when an overzealous security guard gets nosy and patrols the ladies’ restroom that my overnight residencies cause a kerfuffle. But consider yourself fortunate this time, good sir: I won’t ask to speak to your manager.

Tara Campbell is a writer, teacher, and fiction co-editor at Barrelhouse. Publication credits include Masters Review, Wigleaf, Electric Literature, CRAFT Literary, Strange Horizons, and Escape Pod. She’s the author of two novels, two hybrid collections, two short story collections, and a chapbook.
