My Therapist Tells Me About Her Husband

by Emily Rinkema

She describes the way he leaves food in the sink after doing dishes but insists on everyone taking their shoes off at the door. She says this makes no sense, the contradiction, that it infuriates her in a way she knows it shouldn’t. I ask her to say more. I ask if she’s talked to him about it, the contradictions, and we both look at the clock. She keeps going. We both know that some things can’t be fixed, that sometimes the world’s just too fucked up, that sometimes it’s best to just putty the cracks with other people’s problems.
