Bloodsucker

As I floated on my back, ears plugged with water, I felt weightless as if I wasn’t there. When I emerged from the lake, I discovered a leech clinging to my skin. In a panic, I ripped the creature off and stared at the bloody red mark it left behind. Later that night I read that leeches can grow ten times in size as they fill with blood. That when they’re done, they might detach on their own. After that, I wondered if I would ever be capable of giving enough.
